Whether approached by the formal eastern mall or the meandering southern scenic driveway, from the moment the monumental wrought iron gates glide silently open it is apparent that everything has been meticulously designed and implemented. Rarely are buildings and settings integrated as completely as at Capital. There is a strong sensibility that this special place is destined to be etched into Australian golf history.

It is set in the tradition of the magnificent clubhouses of the past but is complete with every modern amenity and unsurpassed in luxury. It is a beautiful architectural composition and a hospitable group of reception rooms. Never has interior design had such attention paid to every conceivable detail. The result is convivial, comfortable and relaxed. The sun drenched flagstone patios and vine shaded pergolas assail the senses and complement the golfing experience. Full length picture windows are carefully positioned to enjoy commanding views down the fairways and give an immediate aspect over the putting green.

The interior is spacious and lofty, emphasised by extravagant wall panelling featuring Australian hardwood. Gleaming stone floors, deep velvet carpets, light fittings individually wrought from bronze by local craftsmen and sumptuous furnishings complete the setting Uniquely Australian symbolism and flavour has been incorporated in the building design and striking interiors. This is reflected in the impressive dining room and lively spike bar through to the intimacy of the cosy library.

An astounding collection of 250 photographs from other great golf course locations around the globe grace the walls, competing for attention with the stunning views over the course and, often, a curious peacock. Particularly admired is the photograph of mist and turbulent sea at Cypress Point's famous 16th which occupies 40 square feet outside the spike bar. Displaying this wonderful collection to full effect. - most of golf's great holes can be revisited, admired and compared - was no mean feat and accounts for a large number of the Clubhouse's 3,000 light fittings.

The locker rooms are beautifully appointed with everything a visiting player needs, including a steam room and sauna. The gentlemen's lounge adjoining the changing room is luxurious with free-standing internal pillars adding to the feeling of solidity and spaciousness. The walls are adorned with 54 large photographs showing the grandeur and moods of Shadow Creek, the course that Steve Wynn and Tom Fazio created in the middle of the Nevada desert. In contrast, the ladies' lounge is soft and feminine, featuring an extensive collection of rare golfing prints. Marble and wood panelling, rich carpet and Chinese ceramics complement the framed prints while the locker room offers a large range of cosmetics and is decorated with photographs of the game's greats including, naturally enough, Karrie Webb.

Golfers travelling without their own equipment do not play at a disadvantage at Capital because the pro shop stocks 50 sets of the finest clubs available to all guests.
